Description

The email, SMS & automation developer is a specialized role that combines the development of email and SMS campaigns with the implementation of automated workflows across multiple communication channels. We’re looking for a true coding enthusiast who loves creating campaigns using email and SMS best practices, working with subscriber lists and large databases and setting up workflows that maximize deployment efficiencies. In this role, you’ll be the subject matter expert providing recommendations and implementation plans to deliver timely, personalized and relevant messages to audiences across different touchpoints while finding ways to minimize manual effort through automation. 

This person could be located in the Kansas City, MO, office; Columbia, MO, office; or remote. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Email Development 

  • Build responsive and visually appealing emails using HTML and CSS. This includes building promotional, welcome, newsletter, transactional, seasonal and other types of emails.

  • Ensure compatibility across different devices (desktop, mobile, tablet) and email clients (Gmail, Apple Mail, Outlook, etc.).

  • Personalize emails based on audience data and use dynamic content to drive increased engagement.

  • Ensure that emails render correctly across multiple email clients, testing for deliverability issues and optimizing performance.

  • Create UTMs and short links (URLs) that track user clicks and drive traffic to websites or landing pages.

SMS Development

  • Build SMS messages that are concise, impactful and designed to drive action. This includes building offers, reminders, alerts and other types of SMS messages.

  • Personalize emails based on audience data and use dynamic content to drive increased engagement.

  • Create short links (URLs) that track user clicks and drive traffic to websites or landing pages.

Automation

  • Set up and manage automated workflows that trigger messages (email or SMS) based on user actions. This includes welcome journeys, confirmation messages, birthday greetings and additional messages.

  • Design and document automated journeys that guide users through various stages, such as onboarding, engagement, retention and re-engagement.

  • Integrate email and SMS tools with CRM platforms, e-commerce systems or other data sources to trigger messages based on audience data.

Subscribers and Lists

  • Upload, build and manage email and SMS lists by using various communication platforms and internal databases. 

  • Use APIs to integrate with other systems, data sources and services to deliver more targeted, dynamic and seamless communication experiences for subscribers.

  • Ensure data accuracy and apply best practices for maintaining list hygiene.

Compliance and Best Practices

  • Ensure compliance with laws and regulations related to email and SMS marketing, such as GDPR, CAN-SPAM Act (email) and TCPA (SMS).

  • Manage subscriber lists to ensure recipients have given explicit consent to receive emails and SMS messages and provide easy ways to opt-out or unsubscribe.

  • Implement best practices to maximize email and SMS deliverability, including managing sender reputation and avoiding spam filters.

Analytics and Testing

  • Monitor key performance metrics for both email and SMS campaigns, such as open rates, click-through rates (CTR), conversion rates, opt-out rates and bounce rates.

  • Run tests on both email and SMS campaigns to determine which messaging, timing or frequency works best for engaging the target audience.

  • Conduct automated and manual quality assurance testing, focusing on link and rendering evaluations across critical devices and email clients. 

  • Bring forward recommendations for optimizations based on learnings and insights. 

Miscellaneous

  • Collaborate with designers, copywriters and other team members to ensure that the communications align with the vision and outcome the team is trying to achieve.

  • Work alongside clients to manage their platforms and offer consultation with email and SMS campaign development.

  • Create detailed campaign documentation. 

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Familiarity and experience with at least one of the following email marketing platforms: Campaign Monitor, MailChimp, Constant Contact or ClickDimensions (Click)

  • Familiarity and experience with at least one of the following SMS platforms: Twilio, Textedly, Klaviyo, SMSBump or SimpleTexting

  • A solid understanding of mobile-responsive design, accessibility and dark mode in HTML and CSS tailored for email

  • Familiarity and experience with email quality assurance programs, including but not limited to Litmus and Email on Acid

  • Design knowledge with an ability to use Figma and Adobe Suite

  • General knowledge of usability, accessibility and content marketing

  • Experience working with large email lists and databases

  • An eye for detail to catch errors before deployment

  • Excellent time management to stay organized and meet deadlines

  • Ability to offer front-end development assistance for landing pages and other web components related to the email or SMS campaign is a plus.

Education/Experience/Certification(s):

  • 5+ years of relevant email, SMS and automation work experience 

  • Digital/marketing agency experience is preferred but not required.
